The Pharaohs pulled out a sensational comeback against Angola on Friday night to book their place in the final round of the World Cup qualifiers.
The Egyptian players were shocked by two goals from the home team in the first 35 minutes of the game but a late first-half goal from Mohamed Elneny and a strong shot from Akram Tawfik in the second half secured a draw for Carlos Queiroz’s men.
Egypt’s captain Mohamed Salah made the difference in the game, setting up Egypt’s two goals with beautiful passes.
The draw was enough to send Egypt to the next round as the Pharaohs lead the group by four points clear before the final group stage game.
“We did not start well and they had the advantage with two goals but our performance improved during the game. We achieved our goal and we are in the final round.” Egypt’s defender Ahmed Hegazi said after the game.
Egypt will face Gabon on Tuesday at Borg El Arab Stadium and Queiroz is expected to give more playing time to several players, who did not have the chance to play against Angola.
