Ahly needed two late goals to down a resilient Gouna side 2-0 on Sunday and remain in touch with leading duo Zamalek and Pyramids FC on top of the Egyptian Premier League table.
The Red Devils, reeling following a recent poor run that included a 2-0 league loss to Pyramids and a 2-1 defeat by Zamalek in the Egypt Cup final on Thursday, broke the deadlock on 73 minutes, thanks to a header from central defender Rami Rabia.
Tunisian left-back Ali Maaloul converted a penalty five minutes later to ensure Ahly’s win and ease their disappointment as they look to salvage their season after they also lost to Morocco’s Wydad in the African Champions League final in May.
Ahly lie third in the table with 51 points, five behind Pyramids — who played two games more — and six adrift of leaders and defending champions Zamalek, who played one match more.
Gouna are 14th on 26 points, just three above the relegation zone.
