Pyramids FC beats Zed FC 1-0 & wins first-ever Egypt Cup

In a thrilling Egypt Cup final on Friday, Congolese striker Fiston Mayele delivered a clutch late goal, lifting Pyramids FC to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Zed FC and clinching their first-ever trophy.

In the 83rd minute, Fiston Mayele shook off his marker to expertly nod in Mohamed Chibi’s pinpoint corner, delivering a crushing blow to Zed FC. The debutants had squandered several chances in the first half and then shifted to a more cautious strategy in the second, only to be punished by Mayele’s decisive header.

For Pyramids FC, the third time was the charm. After falling short in the 2019 Egypt Cup final against Zamalek and again in the 2022 final against arch-rivals Al Ahly, they finally broke through to claim their first major trophy.

The emerging powerhouse in Egyptian football can now lay their past heartbreaks to rest, including their defeats in the 2019 African Confederation Cup final to Morocco’s RS Berkane and the 2023 Egyptian Super Cup against Al Ahly.

Pyramids FC’s victory shatters a 13-year stranglehold on the Egypt Cup by Cairo giants Al Ahly and Zamalek, making them the first team outside the duo to lift the trophy since Enppi’s 2011 triumph.

Since their 2018 rebranding under Saudi ownership led by Turki Alalshikh, the former El-Assiouty FC have used their financial firepower to build a star-studded roster, quickly rising as a formidable force in both Egyptian and continental football.

Now under the ownership of Emirati businessman Salem Al-Shamsi, Pyramids FC have established themselves as a consistent top-three finisher in the league, while also making a strong impression in both the CAF Confederation Cup and the Champions League.
