BIG GAME, BIG GOAL, MOHAMED SALAH! -Report
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah converted a stoppage-time penalty to give Egypt a 2-1 victory over Congo and seal their place at the 2018 World Cup.
It was Salah’s second goal of the night in Borg El Arab on Sunday after Arnold Bouka had netted a late equalizer for Congo.
Egypt are through to their third World Cup finals and their first World Cup since 1990.
With one game to play they top African Group E by four points, and are the second team from the African qualifiers to book their ticket to Russia following Nigeria.
More than 80,000 supporters at Alexandria’s Borg El-Arab erupted into ecstasy when Salah broke the deadlock three minutes past the hour mark as Egypt looked close to realizing a long-held dream, having made the last of their two World Cup appearances 27 years ago in Italy.
Argentinean coach Hector Cuper smoothly led Egypt to the World Cup finals, with his blend of tactical nous, patience and discipline proving effective despite stinging criticism of what many deemed his overly-defensive approach.
