Egyptian Football Association spokesman Azmy Megahed tells Ahram Newspaper, ‘we’ll resume league, cup on 24 August’
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Monday that football activity in Egypt would likely resume late next month.
“God willing, we will resume the league and the cup on 24 August,” EFA spokesman Azmy Megahed told Ahram Newspaper.
All football activities in Egypt have been suspended since February’s Port Said stadium disaster, in which dozens of fans were killed and hundreds injured. Continental matches for Egyptian clubs and national teams are still being held behind closed doors for security reasons.
“We’re just waiting for confirmation from the interior ministry, but hopefully the competitions will be held according to schedule,” said Megahed.
In late March, the interior ministry called for a series of security precautions to be implemented in the country’s stadiums – including video surveillance equipment, metal detectors and emergency exits – to prevent outbreaks of football-related violence.
