Former Iraq boss Jorvan Vieira will arrive in Cairo on Friday evening to finalise a deal to become Zamalek’s new coach, board member Ibrahim Youssef said.
“Vieira will pen the deal tonight. He will earn $30,000 as a monthly salary,” Youssef, whose younger brother Ismail has been in charge of Zamalek since the departure of Hassan Shehata last month, told Ahram’s Arabic-language sports website.
“He will choose his assistants. Ismail Youssef is likely to remain as an assistant coach,” he added.
Should he complete the deal, Brazilian tactician Vieira will be burdened with the tough task of turning around the fortunes of the ailing Cairo giants, who have not won any trophy since lifting the Egypt Cup in 2008.
The club have also lived in the shadows of bitter foes Ahly since winning their last Egyptian Premier League title in 2004.
Former Egypt boss Shehata, a Zamalek icon, left the club last month after they slumped to a 1-0 defeat by Ahly in the African Champions League, extending their Cairo derby winless streak to 13 matches.
Vieira is best known for steering war-torn Iraq to a remarkable Asian Cup triumph in 2007 following a 1-0 victory over favourites Saudi Arabia in the final.
The 59-year-old, who coached several Moroccan clubs early in his career, had less successful stints with United Arab Emirates trio Ittihad Kalba, Bani Yas and Al Sharjah during the past two years.
