One of world soccer’s biggest names is rumored to be in talks to join MLS, with ESPN FC reporting on Friday that the league has extended a contract offer to longtime Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.
ESPN FC’s Jeffrey Carlisle reported that several MLS teams are interested in signing Drogba, with the Chicago Fire apparently making the strongest push to land the 37-year-old Ivorian. TSN added some new info into the mix on Saturday, reporting that Drogba has held “high level conversations” with the Montreal Impact and that the Quebec club is the forward’s team of choice should he opt to join MLS.
Drogba has been out of contract since his deal with Chelsea expired at the end of last season. He was a significant contributor for the English Premier League champs, scoring seven goals in 38 appearances – 12 of which were starts – across all competitions in the 2014-15 campaign.
Drogba has spent most of his storied career with Chelsea, winning four EPL titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and one UEFA Champions League crown in two separate stints with the London club. He first left Chelsea in 2012, playing briefly with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua and one season with Galatasaray in Turkey before returning to London last summer.
The Ivory Coast’s all-time leading scorer with 65 goals in 104 career international appearances, Drogba appeared in three World Cups with Les Elephants before announcing his international retirement last August.
