“Why people are questioning my lack of goals” -Bassem Morsi
Egypt’s hat-trick hero Bassem Morsi is unfased by his goal drought at club level for Zamalek, saying he is not better than Argentinean wizard Lionel Messi nor Portugal’s scoring machine Cristiano Ronaldo, neither of whom have opened their La Liga accounts this season.
“I don’t know why people are questioning my lack of goals in recent games. It’s something that can happen to any striker in the world,” the 23-year old striker told Al-Hayat TV channel on Monday.
Morsi has gone three games in a row without scoring for Zamalek.
Former Zamalek striker and current Ismaily coach Ahmed Hossam “Mido” said he should be rested to recover his “hunger for goals”.
However, the in-form striker silenced critics with a treble for the Pharaohs in their 5-1 hammering of Chad on Sunday in the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
“I am not to be compared to them but Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo haven’t scored during their first two games in the Spanish League and I haven’t read criticism of them,” he added.
Morsi, who joined Zamalek in June 2014, scored 18 league goals for the Whites last season to finish second in the Egyptian League top scorers table, two adrift of Hossam Paolo.
He has made a stunning start to his international career scoring six goals in four games.
“I want to assure the fans that the goals will come, just don’t focus too much on me,” he concluded.
