Al Masry claimed a narrow 1-0 win over USM Alger in a first-leg 2018 CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal clash at the Al-Masry Club Stadium in Port Said on last Sunday.
Victory gives the Egyptians a narrow lead ahead of the reverse fixture in Sétif, Algeria tonight, the 23rd of September.
On a night of few chances, it was going to take something special to break the deadlock and Mahmoud Wadi didn’t disappoint.
The Palestinian forward showed great determination in the penalty area, but after his initial attempts were blocked the goal-scoring chance seemed to have vanished.
But – with his back to goal – Wadi conjured a moment of magic as he back-heeled the ball into the back of the net to send the home fans into delirium.
The 54th-minute strike was enough to lead the Green Eagles to victory as they now aim to complete the job in Algeria, and duly book their place in the final four at the expense of the ‘Reds and Blacks’.
