First leg result: Ahly 2-0 ES Setif

Al Ahly will be looking to secure their place in the competition’s final when they face Algerian side ES Setif away in the second leg of the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Despite their 2-0 win in the first leg earlier this month, Ahly’s mission in Algeria will not be easy as the hosts will fiercely defend their chances in the continental competition.

“We know that we will face a tough opponent, who play well at home and make use of fan attendance, but Ahly still have the ability to return to Cairo with a victory,” Ahly’s coach Patrice Carteron told the post-match news conference on Monday.

The eight-time African champion will play Tuesday’s clash in good conditions, as the team regained the services of many injured players who were out of action during the last month.

Winger Mido Gaber, defensive midfielder Hossam Ashour, defender Saad Samir and striker Walid Azaro are all fit for the semis.

The return of this trio will boost the team against Setif and gives coach Carteron many options during the game.

Tunisian fullback Ali Maaloul, who sustained a groin injury in the first-leg, is the only player to miss the Setif clash, as he needs around two months to recover from his muscle injury.

Ahly’s assistant coach Mohamed Youssef confirmed that the game will be tough, adding that he is confident that his players with their experience are capable of beating Setif to go through the final.

On the other hand, the Algerian side believes that playing the second leg at home is an edge for them and will help the team in their difficult mission against Ahly.

“Both teams have an equal chance, but, unlike the first leg, we’ll have home advantage and the backing of our fervent supporters,” ES Setif winger Abdelmoumene Djabou told the CAF official website on Monday.

“We have to score goals and at the same time not concede. We know it’s a difficult task, but we’re ready for it.”

The veteran winger revealed that his side was daunted by Ahly’s stature before the first leg and they paid the price of their lack of experience during the game.
