Port-Said disaster verdict | death sentence to 21 defendants

An Egyptian court has announced that 21 people will be sentenced to death for their part in the Port Said tragedy of February 2012.

Clashes between supporters of Al Ahly and Al Masry in a league match between the two sides saw 74 people lose their lives, and the the competition suspended by the authorities.

The verdict has prompted a new burst of violence, with protesters clashing with policemen, causing the death of a further 16 people.

This follows a week of violence across the country, in which 450 were wounded after protests against the government.

The verdict for the remaining defendants will be announced on March 9.
