Al Ahly 3-2 Arab Contractors | Late Afsha Goal Seals Comeback Victory

Ahly came back from two goals down at the half time to beat Arab Contractors 3-2 on Thursday and bounce back in the title race.

The defending champions returned to winning ways after being held to a goalless draw by debutant National Bank of Ahly last week. Ahly moved to the top of the table with 20 points, one ahead of arch-rivals Zamalek, who have played one game less.

The Red Devils struggled a lot during the game as their defence was exposed in the absence of international keeper Mohamed El-Shennawi, who is serving a one-match suspension for unsportsmanlike behavior, and key Moroccan defender Badr Benoun, who fell ill before the game.

Ahly dominated the play in terms of possession but were stunned by an early goal from Bassem Ali in the 39th minute. The former Ahly wing-back fired from inside the area, but the ball was deflected by defender Ayman Ashraf into the net of substitute keeper Ali Lotfi.

Tunisian forward Seif Eddin Jaziri ghosted through Ahly’s defence onto a through ball from Mohamed Hamdi Zaki to slot the ball past Lotfi, who came out late in intercepting the ball.

Coach Pitso Mosimane made a lot of tactical changes in the second half, bringing in forwards Marwan Mohsen, Mohamed Sherif, Salah Mohsen and Taher Mohamed Taher to move to an all-out attack.

The substitutes proved their coach right as Taher curled from outside the box to pull one back in the 59th minute, while Mohamed Sherif tapped in from inside the box to level the score in the 70th minute.

Playmaker Mohamed “Afsha” Magdi scored what seemed a logical winner after being set up by a brilliant backheel from Salah Mohsen in the 80th minute.
