FIFA: El-Shahat & Kahraba are not allowed to play against Palmeiras

Ahly’s attacking midfield duo Hussein El-Shahat and Mahmoud Kahraba have been suspended for Thursday’s Club World Cup third-place playoff against Brazil’s Palmeiras for violating COVID-19 precautionary measures in Qatar, the Cairo club said on Tuesday.

Television footage captured El-Shahat and Kahraba approaching the vibrant Ahly supporters and shaking hands with some following the end of their semi-final clash against Bayern Munich on Monday, including the team’s former iconic playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika.

Ahly revealed earlier on Tuesday that the tournament’s organizing committee had asked the club to carry out nasal swab tests for both men. The Red Devils said they were confident the matter would be sorted out.

However, the club said in a later statement that FIFA had informed them that El-Shahat and Kahraba would not be allowed to play against Palmeiras because they “have not adhered to precautionary measures”.

Ahly might now have to do without three of their regular starters against the South American champions as Tunisian left-back Ali Maaloul remains a major doubt after hurting a hamstring muscle against Bayern.

A Robert Lewandowski brace either side of the interval gave the Bavarians a 2-0 victory over Ahly, the team’s first defeat under South African coach Pitso Mosimane.

Ahly will be looking to emulate their third-place finish of 2006 when they face Palmeiras at the Education City Stadium in Al-Rayyan.
