The White Knights will be eager to keep their Egyptian Premier League hopes alive when they face bottom side El-Entag El-Harby on Thursday, a few days after their title aspirations were dealt a blow following a 2-1 victory to perennial rivals Ahly.

Zamalek were largely outplayed in the first half, committing many errors at the back and failing to mount threats at the other end, apart from a delightful curling strike from veteran winger Mahmoud Shikabala that briefly brought them level.

They improved in the second half but wasted a penalty and failed to find an equalizer, to the dismay of their fans who took to social media to vent their anger and criticize the players, whom they believe did not break a sweat.

Although Zamalek’s defeat in the Champions League final in November last year was more painful, the supporters back then were satisfied with their display as they dominated for long spells.

Zamalek exited the Champions League at the group stage this term, leaving them with only domestic competitions to fight for. The Cairo derby defeat gives Ahly the chance to overtake Zamalek on top with a comfortable six-point lead if they win their rescheduled games.

“Our coach, Patrice Carteron, has stressed on the need to get back on track against El-Entag … to continue competing for the league title,” Zamalek said on their official website.

El-Entag are enduring a terrible season, having only collected 12 points from 17 games. Their last win came at the expense of Gouna in February.
