The Red Devils are eyeing the treble this term and so far they look well-equipped to challenge for all honours.
They set up a quarter-final meeting against Morocco’s Raja as they seek to become the first team to win a hat-trick of straight Champions League titles. Domestically, they look determined to wrestle the crown back from Cairo nemesis Zamalek.
Ahly have made an impressive start to the new season, winning nine out of their opening 10 games and drawing only once.
They top the table with 28 points, two ahead of second-placed Pyramids and three clear of Zamalek. Ahly have a game in hand on the latter duo.
Ahly will be looking to maintain their superb run when they meet Ittihad, who are reeling following their recent poor run.
The Alexandria-based club have not won any league game since beating Masry 1-0 in December, having drawn twice and lost three times since then.
The disappointing results, which saw Ittihad drop to 11th in the table, prompted the club to sack coach Hossam Hassan — Egypt’s all-time leading scorer — and bring in ex-Ahly defender Emad El-Nahhas as a replacement.
Ahly will miss long-term absentees Akram Tawfik and Badr Benoun in defence.
Central defender Rami Rabia and right-back Mohamed Hani are also out after picking up recent injuries while Egyptian international defender Mohamed Abdel-Moneim remains doubtful after fracturing his nose in a World Cup qualifying playoff against Senegal last month.
Ittihad will miss Angolan forward Mabululu due to injury and right-back Hesham Salah due to suspension.
