Zamalek exited the Champions League at the group stage for the second season running, ending their campaign on a low note after failing to bag any win out of six matches in Group D.

New coach Jesualdo Ferreira, who returned to the club he led to a rare domestic double in 2015, is adamant Zamalek can still challenge for domestic honors.

Defending their league crown is Zamalek’s priority, even though they fell three points behind perennial Cairo rivals Ahly, who can go six clear on top of they win their game in hand.

Ferreira, whose first three matches in charge ended in a defeat and two draws in the Champions League, is aware Zamalek can hardly afford to drop any further points but Pyramids provide a stiff test.

The big-spending club, who have serious title aspirations, are second in the table on 26 points, just one ahead of third-placed Zamalek. Their only defeat came against Ahly, who inflicted a bitter 3-0 loss on them last month.

Pyramids are buoyant after reaching the quarter-finals of the African Confederation Cup, the continent’s secondary club competition, where they set-up a clash against DR Congo giants TP Mazembe.

Zamalek have the upper hand in their duels with Pyramids, winning three and losing once in seven meetings.

Both sides will miss some key players. Pyramids’ influential winger Ramadan Sobhi is out through injury while Ferreira surprisingly left out two Egyptian internationals — left-back Ahmed Fattouh and winger Ahmed Zizo.
