The Cairo derby is played between two of Africa’s most successful clubs, Al Ahly and Zamalek. They both belong to the best clubs in entire Africa. Al Ahly was named Africa’s club of the century in 2000. The rivalry between the clubs is so strong that foreign referees are always brought in for the derby games.

State of emergency declared in Cairo; all thoughts are red and white; everybody is talking about Friday’s night; tickets sold out. The reason is obvious; it is the ” fiercest and spellbinding” Cairo derby between Ahly and Zamalek as described by FIFA.

Security restrictions!

Ahly and Zamalek’s radical supporters ‘ultras’ decided not to unfurl their customary banners in Friday’s Cairo derby in protest over security restrictions.

“The government’s security officials said we should inform them of anything we intend to do in the game,” Ultras Ahlawy, the group who support Ahli, said in a https://nilesports.com/news/wp-admin/post-new.phpstatement.

“They also put in place arbitrary restrictions to allow us to display our supporting banners.

“As a result, we decided to cancel the special preparations we usually make for the derby.”

Zamalek supporters also echoed their sentiment, hitting out at security officials for the ‘needless restrictions’.

But the Egyptian interior ministry and the Egyptian FA have a wholly different view.

Tensions between the traditional foes have been running high since Zamalek’s 1-1 draw at home to Police Union last week.

A free-for-all erupted after the game and resulted in bans for Zamalek duo Hazem Emam and Alaa Ali and football director Ibrahim Hassan. Police assistant coach Mohamed Ibrahim was also punished.

Zamalek officials and players accused the EFA of favoring Ahli after complaining about ‘the deliberate errors’ the referees make to help their competitor win the league.

Ahli, on the other hand, said the referees’ mistakes are part of the game, insisting that such errors affect all Egyptian teams.

The EFA said they would come down hard on any rioters during the remainder of the domestic season.

Ahli are on top of the table with 56 points, nine ahead of second-placed Zamalek who played a game more.
