Ahly triumphed over a resilient Modern Future FC, securing their 14th Egyptian Super Cup title on Thursday with a captivating 4-2 victory in an exhilarating extra-time showdown in Abu Dhabi.
Mahmoud “Kahraba” Abdel-Moneim initiated the scoring with a header after 13 minutes, and Hussein El Shahat’s precise strike in the 34th minute further solidified the lead, seemingly setting the stage for a comfortable victory for the Cairo giants. However, second-half substitutes Omar El-Said and Mohamed Mahmoud staged a late comeback for Modern Future, leveling the score.
Undeterred, the Red Devils pressed on, and substitute Anthony Modeste secured a crucial header in the 114th minute. Karim Fouad then sealed the deal two minutes later, ensuring Ahly’s victory.
The initial moments were tense, with Modern Future’s Abdelkabir El Ouadi posing an early threat. Ahly responded promptly, as Kahraba directed Ali Maaloul’s corner into the net, eluding the outstretched arms of Mahmoud Abdel-Rehim. El Shahat capitalized on Kahraba’s clever lay-off to double the lead, putting Modern Future in a challenging position.
In the second half, Koller opted for an offensive strategy, bringing in Modeste, Fouad, and Amr El-Sulaya. Despite Ahly’s continued dominance, El-Said capitalized on a mistake from goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, reducing the deficit for Modern Future. Mahmoud’s clinical strike from outside the box then leveled the game, pushing it into extra time.
Driven by the determination to defend their title, Ahly sustained the pressure during the additional period. Modeste ultimately broke the deadlock with a powerful header from Maaloul’s cross, and Fouad’s composed finish secured a decisive advantage.
This triumph signifies Ahly’s third consecutive Super Cup victory and concludes a remarkable year for the Red Devils, who have now amassed five trophies in 2023.
