The Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly embarked on an arduous journey to Ghana to take on Medeama in the fifth round of the CAF Champions League group stage at TNA Park.
The Red Devils are resolute in their quest to cement their position at the summit of Group D.
Currently leading the group with six points from four rounds, Al Ahly is poised to maintain their lead, with Medeama trailing at the bottom with four points.
Al Ahly has petitioned the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to postpone the match following a minor mishap involving their private jet at Accra airport in Ghana on Wednesday.
In a statement released on Ahly’s official website, it was disclosed that the aircraft was deemed unfit for flight, and with no alternative means of transportation available, the prospect of playing the scheduled match on Friday was deemed excessively challenging.
“The club has consequently petitioned CAF to defer the match,” the statement continued.
Despite the challenges, Ahly’s aircraft touched down in Kumasi City, Ghana, on Thursday, just a day before the scheduled game.
Newly acquired Palestinian forward Wessam Abou Ali has been named in Ahly’s squad for the first time since his winter transfer. He was sidelined for the Belouizdad game due to injury.
In the meantime, key attacker Mahmoud ‘Kahraba’ Abdel-Moneim was not part of the traveling squad due to personal circumstances.
With the reigning CAF Champions League title under their belt, Al Ahly illustrated their authority in the prior clash against Medeama, clinching a resounding 3-0 win at WE Al-Ahly Stadium last November.
Medeama, making their inaugural appearance in the CAF Champions League group stage, have showcased their mettle by surmounting hurdles to reach this juncture.
Group D pacesetters Al Ahly are in a tight race with Belouizdad and Tanzania’s Young Africans, who trail by just one point.
