Ahly have fined superstar Mohamed Abou-Treika LE50,000 for missing the medal ceremony following the team’s African Champions League triumph on Sunday.
“The technical staff decided to sanction the player for not receiving his medal in the ceremony that followed the game,” read a statement on the club’s website on Tuesday.
Ahly beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 on Sunday to claim their eighth title in Africa’s most prestigious competition.
The incident stirred controversy in the media, with some commentators claiming that the mild-mannered midfielder boycotted the ceremony on purpose as a sign of discontent towards Egyptian football officials.
