Egyptian football club Zamalek announced the death of young player Youssef Mohiye following a car accident Sunday morning.
“With faithful hearts to Allah’s destiny, we grieve the death of Zamalek youngster Youssef Mohiye after a horrible car accident Sunday morning,” stated the club’s official Facebook page.
“We pray that Allah have mercy on him and his family,” the message added.
The footballer, who was on loan to Alexandria-based club Ittihad, was heading to the coastal city from Cairo accompanied by teammate Mahmoud Khaled “Shika” when the accident happened.
Shika survived but lies in hospital in critical condition.
Egypt is notorious for its poor road safety record where roadways are poorly maintained and traffic regulations loosely enforced.
A recent government report said that 100,000 car accidents took place in Egypt from 2008 to 2012, with 33,000 killed and another 150,000 injured.
