The Egyptian FA has turned down Nigeria’s overtures towards Egypt coach Hassan Shehata, the football governing body announced.
The Super Eagles were considering hiring the former Zamalek player during their World Cup campaign. Four more tacticians are nominated for the job.
On its official website, the Egyptian FA cited Nigeria’s shortlist as a reason for their refusal, saying Shehata shouldn’t be compared with other candidates.
“None of the other candidates is as decorated as Shehata. We rejected their offer out of respect our coach,” the statement reads. “This is a final decision.”
Nigeria, who are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Shaibu Amodu, also approached Swedish Lars Lagerback, Serbian Ratomir Djukovic, French Bruno Metsu and Englishman Peter Taylor.
