Preview: Sundowns v Al Ahly | CAF Champions League Quarter Final

9:00 ET Canada-USA | 15:00 Cairo Local Time

Al Ahly defeated Sundowns in last week’s first leg game that took place in Cairo. However, Mngqithi has high hopes to overcome Ahly at home to book a seat in the semifinals of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.

“Minimising our mistakes, I believe we can get the results that we want, although I know it will be a tall order,” Mngqithi told the South African website News24.

“We are confident in our group. I was saying yesterday that if anyone has the capacity to come back a winner, it is Sudnowns.

“Out of all the teams we have in the country who can overcome a 2-0 deficit, it’s Sundowns. I strongly believe that,” he added.

The 50-year-old coach also praised Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane who joined the Reds last season coming from Sundowns.

Mosimane collected with Sundowns 10 titles including CAF Champions League which he clinched from Zamalek in 2016, while in his short period at Ahly he won all the competitions the team participated in, including his second Champions League title which he snatched from the White Knights.

“We’re playing against an astute coach who knows what to do. He can play very quietly to make sure that he exposes the space behind our defence.

“We must be on top of our game in attack and defence and play responsibly to achieve the outcome we want.

“I’m confident and optimistic that if we stay focused, we will win, and I’m still very excited after the performance we produced in the first leg,” he concluded.

Ahly playmaker Nasser Maher confirmed on Thursday that he and his teammates are ready to claim another victory away from home over South African side Mamelodi Sundowns to march on in the African Champions League.

The Caro giants earned a 2-0 first-leg advantage over Sundowns following their home victory and they will be favourites to book a semi-final berth when they face the South Africans in the second leg in Pretoria on Saturday.

“Ahly players will do their best to achieve a positive result against Sundowns to march on in the African Champions League as well as winning their 10th title to please the team’s supporters,” Maher was quoted as saying on the club’s official website.

“Despite the difficult circumstances of key-players absent and injured, Ahly players always have to achieve victory in every game they play,” the Ahly playmaker added.

Ahly have a busy schedule, as they will travel to Qatar to face Moroccan side RS Berkane in the 2020 CAF Super Cup after finishing their mission against Sundowns in the Champions League.

Ahly, who have a record of six Super Cup wins, claimed the Champions League after defeating arch-rivals Zamalek 2-1 in the final last month, while RS Berkane won the Confederation Cup at the expense of Egyptian team Pyramids FC.
