Zamalek Captures CAF Super Cup After Penalty Shootout Victory Over Al Ahly

In a thrilling CAF Super Cup final on September 27, 2024, Zamalek secured their fifth title by defeating arch-rivals Al Ahly in a penalty shootout. The match, held at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, ended 1-1 in regular time.

Al Ahly took the lead in the 44th minute with a penalty from Palestinian striker Wessam Abou Ali, following a VAR review of Hamza Mathlouthi’s foul on Akram Tawfik. Zamalek responded in the 77th minute when substitute Nasser Mansi scored with his first touch, capitalizing on a cross from Omar Gaber.

During the penalty shootout, Zamalek converted all four attempts. Al Ahly missed twice, with Moroccan defender Yahia Attiat Allah’s shot saved by Mohamed Awad and Abou Ali hitting the post, resulting in a 4-3 victory for Zamalek

This win marks Zamalek’s first Super Cup title since 2020, bringing them closer to Al Ahly’s record of eight titles. Notably, veteran playmaker Abdallah El Said lifted his first trophy in six years since leaving Al Ahly in 2018
