Ahly failed to break the deadlock against South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in a tense CAF Champions League group-stage clash on Saturday.
Despite a spirited battle, the match ended in a stalemate, leaving the Red Devils atop Group C with four points, tied with second-placed Orlando Pirates after two rounds.
The hosts, Orlando Pirates, dominated the first half, generating several chances, but Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy stood firm with outstanding saves.
Ahly coach Marcel Koller started Palestinian striker Wessam Abou Ali, recently recovered from an instep injury, alongside Moroccan midfielder Reda Slim and Emam Ashour, returning after missing previous games.
In the second half, Koller introduced Percy Tau, Mohamed ‘Afsha’ Magdy, and Hussein El-Shahat to push for a breakthrough. Despite late pressure, including a stunning El-Shahat strike and efforts from Tau, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper S. Chaine held firm, keeping Ahly at bay.
Ahly now prepares to host Algeria’s Chabab Riadhi De Belouizdad on Sunday, 22 December, in a pivotal third-round group stage clash.
