History

The San Francisco 49ers gained its franchise on June 4, 1944, as a charter member of the All-American Football Conference (AAFC). Their first season was in 1946 and merged into the NFL in 1950.

Anthony J. Morabito, his brother Victor P. Morabito were the founding owners of the 49ers. Together with their business associates in the Lumber Terminals of San Francisco.

Anthony Morabito died on October 27, 1957, due to a severe heart attack during the second quarter of the 49ers and Bears game at Kezar Stadium. After his death, his wife Josephine Morabito took over his shares.

Josephine was one of the first women to hold majority ownership in a professional sports team. When Victor died, his wife, Jane, succeeded with Josephine. Both women managed the team until 1977.

Edward J. DeBartolo Jr. eventually became the new team owner after. He pursued changing the team for their first championship. He believes in treating the players like partners and run the side like a family rather than a business.

San Francisco 49ers eventually took their first-ever league championship in Super Bowl XVI between Cincinnati with a 26-21 win. They gained four more Super Bowl championships after.

One notable athlete that played for San Francisco 49ers from 1985 to 2000 is Jerry Lee Rice Sr. Rice was one of the excellent wide receivers in NFL history for his outstanding records and awards.

He won Super Bowl with 49ers in 1989, 1990 and 1995. He was also named MVP during the Super Bowl XXIII.  It was the first time a receiver got the award.

Steve Young also played for the 49ers from 1987 to 1999. He was one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. He threw for 29,907 yards and 221 touchdowns during his time with San Francisco.

Another electrifying player was the team leader Joe Montana. He played 13 seasons with the 49ers and won 4 Super Bowl championships. He threw 244 touchdowns and a 63.7 accuracy rate.

The Current Quarterbacks

The current 49ers lineup includes Jimmy Garoppolo, C. J. Beathard, and Nick Mullens for quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo had an outstanding career when he was a collegiate at the Eastern Illinois Panthers then drafted for the New England Patriots in 2014. He went to the 49ers in 2017.

Garoppolo became the first 49ers quarterback to win each of his five NFL starts since 1970 with 1,542 passing yards. He also ranked 4th among all quarterbacks in their 1st five starts. Casey Jarrett “C.J.” Beathard was also drafted for the 49ers in 2017, after attending the University of Iowa. He led the university with a 12-0 record during their 2015 season.

He recently lost his 22-year-old brother, Clayton Beathard, after being stabbed to death outside a bar in Nashville last Dec. 21. He went back with the team just before the finals.

Nick Mullens was a rookie and signed as an undrafted free agent last May 2017. He was released in September of the same year. Mullens moved to the active roster in 2018. During Mullen’s NFL debut and first start, he completed 16 of 22 passes for 263 yards. Mullens was the first player to throw three touchdowns in his first game in 49ers’ history.
