Steven Gerrard: “Salah is the best player on the planet right now”

Mohamed Salah produced two world-class finishes and set up goals for Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to lead Liverpool to a 5-2 win over former club Roma on Tuesday, leaving the English team in sight of the Champions League final.

The Egyptian international has now scored in five different Champions League matches this term, a feat only previously achieved by Steven Gerrard, and the former Chelsea forward matched another of Gerrard’s Liverpool records by scoring 10 goals in the competition.

His first goal was a beautifully well struck curling effort into the top corner, whilst he took full advantage of Roma’s slow defenders for his second, breaking in behind before placing a delicate chip over Alisson Becker.

Whilst he opted to show respect to his former employers by not celebrating either goal, Salah continued to pile the misery on for the Giallorossi.

He passed the ball across the goal for Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to score a goal each.Samuel Eto’o has long been the most prolific African forward in Europe’s premier club competition, however, Salah has now become the first player from the continent to score 10 Champions League goals in a single campaign.

The Cameroonian’s record was nine with Internazionale in 2010/11

.Cristiano Ronaldo’s best season in England came in 2007/08 when he scored 42 goals in all competitions, and he lifted the Ballon d’Or as a result.

Salah moved past that on Tuesday with his second goal being his 43rd of the season.Ruud Van Nistelrooy holds the record for goals in an English season when he netted 44 in 2002/03 for Manchester United, and Salah needs just two more to break that and continue his historic debut year on Merseyside.
