Al Ahly is scheduled to play against E-S-Tunis in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final. The Red Devils aim to continue their remarkable track record against their northern African opponents.
Al Ahly and Esperance de Tunis, two of the top teams in North Africa, have a well-established rivalry in the premier continental competition.
Al Ahly has been dominant in this rivalry, having won 10 out of the 20 previous encounters between the two teams. Esperance has managed to secure four victories, and six matches have ended in a draw.
The Red Devils are poised to take full advantage of Esperance’s recent woes and secure a favorable outcome on foreign soil when they clash on Friday.
The Tunisian outfit will be missing several key players, including the Libyan winger Hamdou Elhouni, international midfielder Ghailene Chaalali, and Algerian forward Riad Benayad.
To make matters worse, Esperance has failed to win in their last three matches across all competitions. The absence of their passionate supporters will further dampen their spirits as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has ordered the club to play four home games behind closed doors after a recent fan riot during their quarter-final against the Algerian side JSK.
Al Ahly, on the other hand, are on a mission to add an eleventh Champions League title to their already impressive collection of silverware. The Tunisians, who have already won four times, are keen to clinch their fifth.
The two sides will meet again in Cairo on 19 May for the second leg of this high-stakes encounter.
